Dick Scobee
Astronaut Francis R. Scobee was born on May 19, 1939. He died in the Challenger accident on January 28, 1986.
Scobee was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January of 1978. Scobee first flew as pilot of STS 41-C. During the mission the crew successfully retrieved the ailing Solar Maximum Satellite, repaired it, and replaced it in orbit using the Remote Manipulator System.
Scobee was spacecraft commander on STS 51-L which was launched from Kennedy Space Center on January 28, 1986. He was killed when the space shuttle Challenger broke apart after a Solid Rocket Booster failed.
