Edgar D. MitchellEdgar Dean Mitchell was born on September 17, 1930, in Hereford, Texas. Mitchell grew up in Artesia, New Mexico. After graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1952, Mitchell joined the Navy. After completing flight training in 1954, Mitchell was assigned to a patrol squadron deployed to Okinawa. Mitchell flew attack aircraft from aircraft carriers and was a research project pilot before being assigned as Chief of the Project Management Division of the Navy Field Office for Manned Orbiting Laboratory in 1964.
Mitchell was selected by NASA for astronaut training in April of 1966. Mitchell's first space flight aboard Apollo 14. As the lunar module pilot, Mitchell landed on the moon with Alan Shepard. References: |
