EstesEstes Industries was founded by Vernon Estes and his wife Gleda Estes in Denver, Colorado, in 1958. Vern Estes designed and built the first machine for mass producing model rocket motors and began selling rocket kits by mail in 1960.

- The Gazette reported on February 20, 2004 that Michelle Chesson, a marketing assistant at Estes, won $20,000 in the M&M "Great Color Quest" contest.
- Discovery of a "white powdery substance" on packages from China caused a scare at the Estes plant on August 21, 2007.
- Estes's "Mabel" Produces Its First Motor (January 16, 1959) - Vern Estes's "Mabel," the first automated model rocket motor making machine, produced it's first production motor on January 16, 1959. During the first production run, the machine produced 500 motors to which were sold to Model Missiles, Inc. for seven cents each.
