Gus GrissomVirgil I. Grissom was born on April 3, 1926, in Mitchell, Indiana. Grissom was one of the seven original Mercury. He piloted the Liberty Bell 7 on the second Mercury flight. Grissom was the Command Pilot for the first manned Gemini.
Grissom was the command pilot for the AS-204 mission which was intended to be the first manned Apollo flight. Grissom died in the fire which occurred in the Apollo spacecraft during a launch pad test at Kennedy Space Center on January 27, 1967.
