Mars Climate OrbiterThe Mars Climate Orbiter was designed to study the climate of Mars. A navigation error caused the spacecraft to miss its intended 140รข??150 km altitude above Mars during orbital insertion. Instead it entered the Martian atmosphere and was destroyed by atmospheric stresses and friction.
