Nozomi (Planet B)The Japanese Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science launched the Nozomi spacecraft to Mars on July 3, 1998. Originally named "Planet-B," the probe was renamed "Nozomi" which is Japanese for "Hope."
Nozomi was designed to study the Martian upper atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. Unfortunately, a number of problems, beginning with a malfunctioning valve, prevented the spacecraft from entering orbit around Mars. References: |
