Roger ChaffeeRoger B. Chaffee was born on February 15, 1935 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University in 1957, he entered the Navy.
Chaffee selected to be an astronaut by NASA in October 1963. On March 21, 1966, he assigned to the AS-204 mission (later renamed Apollo 1), the first Apollo flight. But, Chaffee died on January 27, 1967, when a fire started in the Apollo spacecraft during a launch pad test at Kennedy Space Center. References: |
