White Sands Proving Grounds
The White Sands Proving Grounds (now called the White Sands Missile Range) is located in a valley between the Organ Mountains and the Sacramento Mountains.
White Sands is the location of Trinity Site, where the first explosion of an atomic bomb took place on July 16, 1945.
After World War II, captured V-2 rockets and German scientists and engineers were taken to White Sands where test launches of the missles were conducted.
