On September 1, 1939, German troops invaded Poland. On September 3, Britain and France declared war on Germany.
On June 10, 1940, Italy declared war on Britain and France. On June 22, 1941, Germany attacked Russia. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American fleet at Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. On December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan.
On December 11, 1941, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States which declared war on Germany and Italy.
On September 3, 1943, Italy signed a secret armistice with the Allies. On October 3, 1943, Italy declared war on Germany.
On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy to begin the D-Day invasion of northern France.
On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allies.
On August 6 and 9, 1945, The United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan. On August 14, 1945, Japan agreed to an unconditional surrender.
